The last I checked the iPod still had about 70%
of the market share for mp3 players which is outstanding considering there are
thousands of alternatives to choose from. Since its invention in 2001 I myself
have heard the word iPod maybe 10 billion times! Ok maybe that number may have
been a little exaggerated but I'm sure we all heat the term at LEAST once a
day. This led me to the question what does iPod stand for?
Well I did a bit of research and personally I was
thinking it was some major g-14 classified secret acronym. The term iPod
(according to Apple) simply stands for Internet POD. The POD in the name stands
for "Portable Open Database" which is basically the software used to
power the iPod.
The name iPod was proposed by Vinnie Chieco when
a group of copywriters were called by Apple to figure out the best way to
present the new device to the public. After Cheico saw a prototype he was
inspired by the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase "Open the Pod
bay door, HA!" They then added the I which Apple uses in most of its lines
such as the iMac and thus the name iPod was born.
